Washington — President Joe Biden and his campaign team are facing a sudden and delicate shift in their reelection strategy following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania.
The Biden campaign and Democrats across the party are now reconsidering their plans to counter the Republican National Convention messaging, which had been in the works for some time. A senior Democratic adviser highlighted the challenge, saying:
“The big issue is how to campaign against him or attack him. Can we even do that this week?” Discussions are underway to calibrate criticism of Trump to focus on policy differences rather than personal attacks. Plans that had been made to respond to the GOP convention are now being reviewed and potentially adjusted.
Both Biden and Trump called for unity in the hours following the assassination attempt, which killed one spectator and injured two others. In a rare Oval Office address on Sunday night, Biden urged Americans to “lower the temperature in our politics.” He added:
“While we disagree, we are not enemies. We’re neighbors.”
Prior to the shooting, Biden had been trying to assuage concerns among members of his own party. However, the campaign’s focus abruptly shifted as news of the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, emerged. Stunned Biden campaign officials decided to pause all outbound communications and pull TV ads. Staff were urged to “refrain from issuing any comments on social media or in public.” The mood within the White House and the Biden campaign was described as “shock” as they navigated their response to the incident.
The Biden campaign has not yet decided when to resume its advertising campaign against Trump. A Democratic strategist noted that the harder question is how and when to resume with 114 days until the election. A central challenge for the Biden campaign will be crafting a message that is appropriate for the moment, especially after a month of more forceful rhetoric directed at his predecessor, particularly following Trump’s criminal conviction. Sen. Chris Coons, a close Biden ally and co-chair of the Biden reelection campaign, echoed the need for a change in tone:
“We have to reduce the rhetoric and the tone. I’d urge folks to turn off their phones and get off of social media today. And take some time with your family and reflect on who we are as a nation and who we want to be.”
Biden and his team are now facing the dual tasks of responding to the assassination attempt and navigating a highly polarized political landscape. The attempted assassination of his opponent also challenges two central goals of Biden’s presidency and candidacy: healing a divided nation and restoring faith in American democracy. The shooting has drawn international attention and condemnation, with allies and adversaries alike witnessing the deep divisions within the United States. While the immediate response has focused on unity and lowering political tensions, the coming weeks will test the Biden campaign’s ability to navigate this delicate balance as the election draws closer.
